Black Inventors: The Hidden Figures Behind Everyday Objects

Have you ever stopped to think about the mastermind behind that traffic light you waited at, or the ironing board that keeps your clothes crisp? Many of the everyday items we take for granted were brought to life by brilliant Black inventors!

Here at Black Discoveries, we’re celebrating these hidden figures and their impressive accomplishments:

  • Frederick M. Jones: This prolific inventor held over 60 patents, most notably for revolutionizing refrigeration with his automatic systems for trucks and trains. He co-founded Thermo King, a company that keeps our food fresh on long journeys.
  • Charles Drew: A groundbreaking physician, Dr. Drew developed methods to store and process blood plasma, paving the way for modern “blood banks.” During World War II, he led blood plasma programs for both the US and Britain, but tragically resigned when segregation policies were implemented.
  • Sarah Boone: This dressmaker didn’t just mend clothes, she revolutionized garment care! In 1892, she received a patent for the ironing board, becoming one of the first Black women to achieve this recognition.
  • Garrett Morgan: A true innovator, Morgan’s inventions ranged from life-saving devices like the “safety hood” used by firefighters, to the very traffic lights that keep our roads organized.

These are just a few examples of the countless Black minds who’ve shaped our world. Who else would you like to learn more about?
