Shirley’s breakthrough came when she caught the attention of renowned comedian Flip Wilson, who invited her to tour the set of his variety show. This led to her iconic role as the sassy waitress Shirley Wilson on the sitcom “What’s Happening,” where she became a fan favorite.

Despite setbacks in her career, Shirley’s determination never wavered. She continued to grace stages across the country, captivating audiences with her unmatched wit and infectious laughter.

Tragically, Shirley’s life was cut short on December 10th, 1999, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and inspiration. To honor her memory, the Shirley Hemphill Comedy Festival was established, celebrating her life, talent, and impact on the comedy world.
